Who is FLAIR?

A Message from Mike Milstead, Superintendent

I’m very excited about our recently established Foreign Language Academic Immersion program. It’s a unique offering here in Lincoln Parish Schools for forty to fifty new students each year to begin the process of learning a second language as a 4- or 5-year-old. Both longitudinal and cross-sectional studies over many years have consistently demonstrated the highly positive effects of learning a second language as a young child.

Proven benefits of the program include thinking more creatively and analytically, developing an aptitude for problem solving, and promoting a greater capacity for listening and communication in general. Additionally, “immersion students match and often surpass English program students’ performance by grade four or five.”

If you are interested in your 4- or 5-year-old becoming a part of this excellent opportunity, contact Ms. Lisa Mangum, Elementary Supervisor, at the Lincoln Parish School Board, (318) 255-1430.

Hearing these children speak and listen to their teacher in French is amazing! If you did not know differently, you would assume these children must come from French speaking homes. Not at all!

When students have direct access to native speakers and the ability to use a language in the context of social cues, young learners are most likely to be impacted long-term by the language.

My immersion students will correspond with my former French school through letters, packages, and FaceTime. I can't wait for them to discover a new culture!
